It looks like I will at least have to wait another year to get into the Hawaii Ironman World Championships. I did not get in through the lottery
… and I was almost positive I would get in with my 4% chance that I had.
In a way this is good because it 1) gets me more motivated to qualify for the race and 2) allows me to tie up some loose ends before having to compete in a full Ironman. It’s almost just like what 207 Ironman World Champion Chris McCormack said, “If I had won the race my first try I wouldn’t be the racer I am today.” This was in reference to 2002 after his 1st Ironman World Championship where he was in a position to win the race but bonked on the run and failed to finish, he finally won in 2007. Of course It is a little different with me because I am not even in the race and I will never win it but if I had gotten in this year I probably wouldn’t be training as hard to be a qualifier, I would just be training to finish the race.
Because of this minor setback I have made a couple new goals. These Goals all have a end Date by July 2009
1) Half-Marathon time at 1:25 or below (Current time 1:53:15)
2) Bike mph up to 22 average (Currently average 19-20 mph on a great day and 15 mph on a bad day)
3) Swim 1.2 miles below 30 minutes (Swam a 40 minute 1.2 miler in Cali for the 70.3)
4) 70.3 time under 4:40 hours ( Ran a 7:02:44 in the California 70.3)
What this means is that I need to get at least 30% better within the next year. This will be tough but I am definitely motivated enough. Wish me luck… ok, maybe it will be better to wish me some hard training.

I ran the Provo half marathon today with Tammy and Merri. Tammy and Merri ran the relay and I ran the entire half marathon. I killed my previous fastest time by almost 30 minutes. I finished in 1:52:30 1:53:15. My average heart rate was 181bpm and my max was 197bpm. The watch says I burned 1684 calories which 30% was fat… sweet. Looks like after a year of training for triathlons I am finally getting faster. YEH! Can’t wait to see how I am doing in 1 year from now.
Tammy and our next door neighbor Merri had a time of 1:43 for their half marathon relay. They are kicking butt! IT was nice getting to run with Tammy for the first part of the half.
On a side note, I wore my sweet mustache at the start of the race but it fell off around mile 3. I need to make sure I bring backups next time. I will post a picture when I find one.
– Time Edit. After looking at the pictures I was off by 45 seconds. My actual time was 1:53:15, which is still a personal best. –

Well after running pretty slow in the Ironman 70.3 I figured I needed a good speed workout to get me going. I also ate a ton of crap coming back from Cali so I also needed to burn off the cookies, Coca Cola, In-n-Out Double Burger and the McDonald’s Big Mac that I ate yesterday on our way back home. I set a new personal best for my 10k at 51:23. 14 seconds faster than my race time a couple weeks back. Not to shabby. My goal is to break the 50 minute barrier within the next month or two. I actually only ran about 6 miles instead of a full 6.2 so I added the extra time.
I averaged an 8:17 minute mile with average heart rate at 185 and my max heart rate at 197. My max heart rate is definitely getting lower when I push myself but my average is staying the same. I am just able to keep my heart rate up for a longer period of time.
Race Pace Run: 6 Miles . Time: 48:53 – Cal: 768 – HR avg: 185 – HR max: 197 – Rate: 8
